Church building Rijswijk
The assignment for the interior design of this church consisted of arranging functions and spaces, modernising all facilities and making a proposal concerning the use of colours, materials and furniture.
One of the key elements of the design was to have efficient walking routes. Furthermore, all the rooms had to be designed in such a way that they could be used and divided in a number of different ways; the building had to be accessible to all people (young, old and disabled) and the building's architecture had to complement the essence of the church..
Another wish was that the church's identity should be more recognizable from the outside of the building than previously. The congregation members also had a say in the design. Some of them valued the existing design elements and symbolism and wanted to maintain them whereas others were keen on innovative changes. The first challenge was accordingly to make a balanced design that the majority of the congregation members would find acceptable.
